How to make individual tax payments online

INDIVIDUAL TAXPAYERS

Federal tax payments for balances due can be made online at IRS Direct Pay

You will need your social security number, bank routing number & bank account number

  • On the next screen, click the box for “Make a Payment”.

    • For IRS Balance Due payments, “Balance Due” as the reason for payment, “Income Tax – Form 1040” as what you would like to apply payment to, and select the applicable tax year for tax period for payment.

    • For IRS Extension payments, “Extension” as the reason for payment,  “4868 (for 1040, 1040A, 1040EZ)” as what you would like to apply payment to, and select the applicable tax year for tax period for payment.

    • For IRS Estimated tax payments- choose “Estimated Tax” as the reason for payment,  “1040-ES” as what you would like to apply payment to, and select the applicable tax year for tax period for payment.

  • On the next screen, you will enter the year of your most recently filed tax return as “Tax Year for Verification”, your filing status (MFJ or MFS if married, Single or HOH if unmarried, etc.) in the field for “Filing Status”, and then enter your personal info (name, address, date of birth, etc.) for married taxpayers, use the SSN & name of the primary taxpayer (whoever is listed first on the tax return))

  • Click continue and enter desired bank account information on the next screen

  • Print confirmation screen and keep for your records; you can also upload a copy to the portal.

California tax payments for balances due can be made online at FTB Pay

Select "Use Web Pay Personal"

  • Enter primary taxpayer social security number, last name and Captcha code

  • Enter name and address information

  • Select Payment Type. Most common payment types are:

    • Tax Return Payments (540)

    • Estimated Tax Payment (540-ES)

    • Extension Payments (Form 3519)

    • Amended Tax Return Payment

  • Select Applicable Tax Year

  • Select Payment amount and payment date

    • Note, for estimates, you can schedule multiple payments with different payment dates.

  • If married, select "Yes" to joint payment

    • Enter Spouse's information

  • Enter Bank Account Information

  • Submit payment and print/save confirmation

    Note: The FTB does not accept payments by credit card without charging a fee
